Curvaceous cabinets may be the most striking feature of this room (highlighted by aluminum floorboards that pull away for access to plumbing and electrical) but a right-angled corner cupboard has a trick up its sleeve: a special mechanism draws baskets up from the rear when the door is opened.
2 Instant Inspiration
An eight-inch-high stowaway computer lives in a cupboard, ready to download cooking shows (or an episode of Top Chef), which are displayed on a 42-inch screen which, thanks to a handy bracket, can swing out of its corner suite.
3 Bright Ideas
Task lighting a-plenty sets off a backsplash of root beer-float glass tiles and a luminous CaesarStone countertop. Strips of LED lighting above taller cabinetry and a frosted white-glass wall unit with internal illumination deliver a soft nighttime glow.
4 Secret Stash
Appliances aren’t allowed to muddle things in this sleek revision. Custom panels of cherry wood were built onto the faces of a new Thermador fridge, Miele dishwasher and even the Miele double oven—complete with a roomy 24-inch steamer up
on top.
5 Age of Aquarium
A saltwater fish tank gives the space a shot of whimsy and also serves as a happy hinge between kitchen and family room. Ductal concrete at the tank’s base was stained to match the surround of the nearby family-room fireplace.
