1 High Lights
The original, overzealous plan: a 16-by-16-foot box of light hanging from the ceiling. The alternative: six sharp squares of incandescents suspended from the 14-foot ceiling. An east-facing window to the right of the dining table floods the kitchen with natural morning light.
2 Keep It Real
Designer Gerry Redl has an eye for clean, contemporary design but in his own home prefers a rich, masculine palette. Accentuated by original brick walls in this space, it’s a look he calls “comfortable contemporary.”
3 Cooking with Steam
A suite of Miele appliances does the cooking and a 110-bottle wine cooler brims with pairings. Conspicuously absent: a microwave. The
24-inch steam oven can deal with everything but popcorn.
4 Wide Berth
Custom-stained walnut cabinetry was built 32 inches wide to allow organization-friendly drawers-within-drawers, plus proper stainless-steel cutlery divisions. Two roll-up stainless-steel “garage” doors disappear into higher cabinetry to reveal dishes and glassware.
5 Tropic Thunder
The rich, caramel-coloured koa wood that covers the island is an endangered species (it only grows in Hawaii) but Redl salvaged the coveted veneer from lumber destined for the landfill. On top, a pair of three-inch-thick bamboo butcher blocks flanks the sink. The rounded end opens up to a spacious lazy Susan.
