Ranch Revisited

It was the late 1960s when architect Bill Ross designed his first house: a low-slung, sprawling bungalow for his parents on a ranch outside Edmonton. A generation later, urban sprawl framed the property, and the space needed to be brought into the 2010s so he and wife, Judy (the home’s current owners), could accommodate their own visiting children and grandchildren.

1 Circle of Life
The home’s original hexagon-shaped rooms came out of a 1960s architecture experiment: Ross had been exploring the social benefits of circular rooms (think teepees), which he felt were more conducive to conversation and gatherings. Riffing on the traditional circle, Ross chose elongated hexagons for the public spaces throughout the home and ultimately decided the renovated kitchen would need to sync with its original hexagonal layout.

2 History Channel
The couple wanted to pay homage to the round, pounded-copper fireplace that divides the kitchen from the family room. At the same time, they were keen to introduce more contemporary elements. To wit, a striking new hand-hammered copper hood fan rests above a commercial six-burner FiveStar range, while stainless-steel mosaic tiles decorate the backsplash.

3 Green Dream
Custom sage-green cabinets honour the original wood walls and ceiling throughout, while simultaneously tying in with the kaleidoscopic floor tones. Honed Bianco Carrara marble counters throughout the kitchen lend sophistication, and an expansive butler’s pantry adjacent to the kitchen features the same cabinetry seen in the kitchen.

4 Furniture Polish
A second sink on the oversize island offers a prep area on one side, while the other houses pony-skin copper stools to echo the hood fan and recall the property’s original roots as a horse-racing ranch.

5 Pattern Language
Ross contemplated myriad flooring choices for the kitchen, but kept coming back to the main hall’s original green, grey and red slate floor—now a rarity, with a quarry in Vermont being one of the last in North America to still carry it. The design—called “crazy pattern”—felt suitably ranch-like. (The same vintage handiwork is found at Jasper Park Lodge.) The original layout appears random but it actually came from a template. Forty years later, those templates have either been lost or the trades practicing them have all but disappeared. Ross found a retired craftsman familiar with the lost art of hand-cutting and laying each piece like a haphazard jigsaw puzzle.
