CITY GUIDES: Regina

  It Takes a Village
Regina is bouncing with prosperity and an influx of vibrant residents who are breathing new life into a classic neighbourhood.

Savvy foodies know the heartbeat of the home is the kitchen, so why settle for imported cookie-cutter cupboards when design and quality are right on your doorstep? Robert and Charlene Vaughn, new owners of City Space Kitchens & Interior Design in Regina’s Warehouse District, are dealers for two Western Canadian cabinet manufacturers: Surrey, British Columbia-based Merit Kitchens and Dacor Cabinets from Morden, Manitoba. These stylish units allow design to meet versatility—and not just in the kitchen. “These cabinets can be customized to fit any room or closet,” explains interior designer Charlene Vaughn, who consults by appointment in City Space’s studio-showroom.

  Shop Stella & Sway
iWhen Sara Johnson returned to the booming pastures of Regina from Calgary, local professional women began dressing a little better. With the opening of her modern yet comfy boutique, Stella & Sway, Johnson is bringing in lines to meet women’s outfitting needs and necessities: from splurge-worthy Paige Premium Denim to modest and professional Kensie, as well as Canadian labels Elroy and Mia Melon—which come straight from BC Fashion Week. Stella & Sway also carries Honeydew Intimates, which fit perfectly under the new dress you just bought, and luxe makeup line Jaqua from California. This Scarth Street stop is helping women strut just a little stronger.

Shop Hillberg & Berk
Hillberg & Berk
, a “casual luxury” jewellery line designed by Regina’s Rachel Mielke, has gone from the Prairies to the Pre-Oscar Luxury Gifting Suite—and now to the world with the launch of its online boutique. Now Reginans can join fans like Spike Lee (who gave a piece to his wife) and celebrity stylists in partaking in this local jewellery juggernaut. The fall ’08 lines, Nouveau Romanticism, full of bows and all things feminine, and Chic Grunge, with darker gems from India, debut in August. And look for Mielke’s pieces on the next red carpet in Hollywood—or Regina.

Drink Cypress Hills Vineyard
The Cypress Hills are justly known for their breathtaking beauty but if a local vigneron has its way they may soon be Canada’s newest wine destination. Nestled at the foot of Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, the Cypress Hills Vineyard & Winery is the labour of love of Marty and Marie Bohnet, who helm Saskatchewan’s first commercial vineyard and winery. And while cabernet is available, imagine the look on your guests’ face when you pull out a bottle of the saskatoon, chokecherry or rhubarb wines that are offered. Vineyard tours are available and are followed by a light meal and wine tasting on the patio of the winery’s bistro.

Eat Beer Brothers Bakery & Cuisine
Beer is the new wine—at least for one new hotspot in downtown Regina. Beer Brothers Bakery & Cuisine, from the five rugby-players-turned-restaurateurs behind Willow on Wascana, is bringing in a new food fusion where beer is the main menu. (Well, sort of.) The regular pub fare of nachos and wings were banished by executive chef Moe Matthew, who prefers dishes like mussels and gumbos—all marinated in, smoked over or paired with the perfect brew. The casual yet upscale space of course pours everything from the exclusives like Bellevue Creek from Belgium to regular Pil.
